Water pump refit step 6, RAVE states "Lightly grease new joint washer, position on timing cover."

I'm guessing they mean gasket. The one I have is cardboard looking. Can I just put Rotella on it or does it have to be a specific kind of grease? Stores have a million different kinds of grease.

Any number of gasket compounds, don't be generous with Oklahoma grade RTV, be very skimpy.

But aren't grease and RTV very different? I mean, one is a thick lubricant, the other is a rubber gasket material and I already have the cardboard gasket.

there are a variety of gasket "tacky" compounds to make them stick. Since they call for grease here, it is just to hold it in place during assembly. Hylomar is also popular.

Damn, you are getting close - might have that puppy running before Turkey Day! Over a thousand times people have looked over your shoulder and admired what you have done, despite adversity. Rotella door stops realy help get SWMBO with the program. We need a pix of your feet sticking out from under the Disco with the garage door shut on them...

So would you use grease like RAVE says or RTV? Which kind too? There's lots of kinds of RTV and greases at the store.

Ha thanks. Really trying to get it done soon for snow but also taking time to be thorough. Got more pics I need to upload too.

Any kind of grease will be fine, you are just keeping the paper in position on the vertical surface. I didn't use a gasket on mine, just two gallons of RTV (Ruin That Vehicle). No one stocked gasket locally, except dealer at $18, 50 miles one way; and I needed it done. And being over frugal and under brained, I had pulled a water pump from a donor, it looked pretty new compared to mine, $6....

Better to be meticulous and only have to do it once instead of half assed and do it all over again!!!

Damn, well looks like I get to do something again. One of the short water pump bolts stripped the threads from the timing cover. Yes, my torque wrench was set to 28 Nm.
