Default 97 disco will shift to drive position but won't go

Hi all, thanks in advanced for the advice. I've got disco 1 that's doesn't want to go once I shift it to drive. It will go in reverse but that's it. I'll shift it into D but doesn't seem to engage. What are some of the quick and easy things to do before breaking open the transfer case (I assume)? I guess fluid changes to the transfer case and/or transmission to start? Or does this sound something more mechanical or broken? So far no weird grinding or clanking noises. Will engaging the CDL do more harm than good? Thanks.

Did you check the trans fluid level?

Level looks good, but doesnt look as clear as it could be. Doesn't hurt to change I guess.

Any other suggestions, anyone?

Might want to check the trans filter. Lotsa fun. Have you tried locking the transfer case?

I've got the same problem on my 97 D1 , I've replaced the trans filter and put two bottles of Lucas stop slip ....but it's to no avail . I've checked all the linkages .....every thing seems good there .
I'm currently an Automotive Tech. Student at a local CC , my instructors seem to think it is one of the forward drive gears inside the transmission have worn or gone out ....so it looks like both of us are facing a rebuild or a new/newer transmission.

Optimism in the face of defeat...... the ZF is a pretty tough transmission even when neglected. Used are not hard to source and inexpensive. Ashcroft Transmission offers rebuild kits as does fleabay. Couple of DIY rebuilds; DIY rebuild your 4HP24 thread

Nooooo! Ha I was hoping to avoid that. So it's the transmission not a transfer case issue? I just drained all my fluids yesterday and will refill today. I did notice the transfer case was covered in oil and dirt so it's leaking, but looks like it's coming from the front portion not the plate. Also, when I drained it not much came out at all. I'm hoping I'll just have refill the fluids and drive off....but that sounds too easy.

I'll post my results and let you know. In the meantime, I'll start reading about transmission swaps.
