Default '97 Discovery Alarm Gremlin

I'm a new owner of a 1997 Disco and I have a question about the weird alarm system. The car didn't come with the key fob so I just use the keys to lock the doors. However, if I unlock any door besides the drivers side and open it the alarm goes off. I've noticed that the car has had the interior alarm sensor removed and I wonder if that is causing my issue. Should I buy a key fob and program it myself? Would that stop the loud/annoying alarm from going off when I open the tailgate? Thanks!

Keyfob yes, but without it you must operate driver door first.

It is designed to function in that fashion. Lock it with the key, you must unlock driver's door and all the doors will then automatically unlock.

Now you need to downloa the RAVE and get familar with your 97 Discovery.

If I am not mistaken, using the key fob also sets it to a higher level of alarm than just using th key.

The first or lower level is perimetric and using the fob also arms a higher level than is supposed to be able to sense things like a change in internal pressure like if a door was forced open or a window shattered.

You may want to read up on that. There are lots of horror stories of "When the Alarm System Goes Bad". And different years may have different variations of the "immobilzer" syndrone.

If your system has been screwed around with and it goes into a false "Panic Mode"
it kills both the starter and the fuel pump, so better to be forewarned than mystified later. Check into just what may have been done to yours if you want to avoid a "major anomaly".
