98 Disco conversion to TDi w/5 speed manual
It arrived at the local freight depot Monday and I picked it up that afternoon. It is dirtier/greasier than I would have expected from a rebuilt engine. However the transmission is spotless. As long as the stuff inside is as advertised I suppose it is ok. A few parts were damaged and one, the exhaust downpipe, is missing altogether. I guess I will see if Duncan's (Land Rover Import) customer service after the sale is acceptable.
I am just about the pull the trigger on the same combo. Smoked my v8 last week and just about have the engine bay cleaned up and ready to go.
Agreed...its your money...if I had that much..Id spend it on a diesel disco as well....for 10 grand you cant get a 28+ mpg SUV...I am from Joplin..anytime you want to come down and wheel..let me know
TDi is on the engine stand and ready to go in. I had to get a heavier duty engine stand. Holy potato chips is that diesel assembly heavy!!!
I am finally getting some time in the garage. I have pulled the exhaust, transmission, and transfer case.
Unfortunately, my low original mileage Disco is not exactly as I expected. It is obvious the transmission has been out and the transfer case replaced.
I HATE working after people that dont know what they are doing or just dont care. Half of the driveshaft nuts had the heads rounded off and had to be cut off. The transmission to engine bolts must have been put on with an impact at full power. Geez, what a PIA!!
However, from what I can tell the transfer case looks good.
Which brings me to my question, I am being lazy and know I could look it up, but... Im tired after fighting with dumb previous mechanic crap.
It appears there is some sort of solenoid or actuator of some sort on the topside of the transfer case. I have only had one 4WD in my past and the Landcrusier transfer case had no such item.
What is it? Does it prevent shifting of the transfer case when it isnt supposed to be shifted?
Thanks in advance!
Terry

Based on what I googled, it is the transfer case interlock to prevent the transfer case from being inadvertantly shifted.
Can I just remove it. It looks like a possible future failure point. I want make this truck as simple as possible.
Thanks,
Terry

You can blank it off or like most just remove the pin and then no blanking plate needed......
75 TR7 FHC, talk about an early adopter.....should have waited for an 80 TR8. If you do toss the 4.0 into the 8 let me know how it goes.....

If you need anything for that 75 TR7, I have probably the largest non-vendor spare parts supply of anyone for the TR7s.
I think I am going to keep the transfer case interlock but wire it to a hidden switch.
