So I had an ABS light on and found online about the paperclip method of reading and clearing the codes. Background is that I swapped the cluster with a donor because mine was cracked, and didnt know if the light was from my truck or the other, so wanted to clear the codes to find out. Long story short I tried joining pins 5 and 15 like the one write up said, it seemed to show the codes and clear them but after that it just kept showing the diagnostic mode (one long, pause, one short, repeat) with no codes, so drove it for a bit like the instructions said but light stayed on, tried to get the codes again using that method but nothing, just got the same long, pause, short, repeat. Then I found someone who said you had to pull the relay, even though he had an OBD2 like mine and the other post said you didnt have to, but I couldnt seem to find the relay, it wasnt in the position where RAVE and that person showed it, and there wasnt a missing plug indicating that just the relay was missing. Any idea where it might be? Its an NAS 96 OBD2. Also, I tried his pin method of 2-5 and 4-15, this managed to show me the codes one more time, I removed the wires as instructed and cycled the key, then it never showed the codes again and simply gave the same long, pause, short response. Light still hasnt gone out even after driving, but shows no codes anymore regardless of which method I use. Not sure where to go, maybe try to find that relay and pull it and try again? Any help on this would be appreciated.
You can see that the ABS warning relay should be right after the black one on the left side on an angle, but it doesnt appear there and cant find any wiring or anything indicating that it was removed.
As an aside, I am sure that my ABS is malfunctioning and that it was likely that my ABS bulb on my old cluster was burnt out. If I disable the system, it seems I just have to pull the fuse in the engine bay? Nothing else I have to do? I will likely either remove the light bulb from the dash or replace it with a burnt out one so that I dont have to look at the warning.
I recently went through identifying the three ABS-related relays on my '94. Mine did not match up with the RAVE; I wondered if someone had moved them, as it was clear someone had been in there in the past. I used the wiring diagrams in the ETM to figure it out.The diagrams will have the color and the wire size, which works great for figuring this out.
The black one in front should be the "pump" relay. The "load" relay was a yellow relay in the third slot (from the end closest to you/to the passenger seat) in the right/passenger side row of relays in that holder [and I'm pretty sure it's the same for yours, as I see the fatter orange and brown wires, both with pink tracers, in your pic] and the "warning" relay was a green relay in the second slot in right side row in that same holder [you have a green one in that slot, too, but I can't read the wires].
I suspect the wiring will be the same. You're looking for all small wires, two black, one orange with pink tracer, and one black with grey tracer.
I had no luck with trying to read my codes. It was more of an exercise of trying to clear the codes to make the light go out, albeit temporarily (as I don't have rings on my CVs for the system to work).

Good luck!
Thanks! I will give this a try in the morning. I am pretty sure I will end up disabling it, but I would like to at least see what it says is wrong first so I know if I can fix it. Nothing has been an easy fix so far so I doubt itll be as easy as adjusting a sensor... We will see. I will report back with my findings in case others have a similar situation
Just as an update, I tried again today and could not get the codes to clear successfully. Thanks again for your help though, hope the location of that relay helps others who cant find theirs based on RAVE.
You have a 96 D1 correct? You should be able to get a hold of someone with a decent enough scantool to read the ABS codes for you. I have an older Lynx system, but most newer OBD2 scan tools can now read LR ABS fault codes.

I do have a friend who is a mechanic with a fancy scan tool, I have to bring it in to him to recharge the AC so I will have him scan it then just to see. But knowing the way the rest of this restoration has gone I am sure the ABS system has hundreds of dollars worth of broken parts and wont really be worth fixing since its not a daily, but I will scan it just to see if its something simple.
On a D1 it's usually the wheel sensors have moved and aren't contacting the reluctor rings properly, connectors for the ABS sensors, or possibly front wheel bearings/swivel ball preload causing issues.

Yeah the swivel ball might be off, I havent attempted to adjust that after the PO lifted the truck, been dealing with thousands of other issues up until now. I have just started to do the items on the "optional" list including the ABS. Thanks for your help, I know youve helped me out in other threads before so I appreciate your feedback and wealth of knowledge!
