Not doubting you BTW, just confused...

Why does altantic british list the 96-99 disco alternator, fuel pump, front cover, serpentine belt, etc. as incompatible with the 95-99 p38?

About the only compatibility I can find is for the gaskets and internal engine parts.

That Denso for 200 is a great deal. I have one that is a "recent rebuild" that I picked up at my local salvage place when I thought mine was bad. It was 45 plus 10 core plus tax so I have sixty something in it.

I may go ahead and install it to see if that cures my flaky tach or not, but I plan on having my MM rebuilt or doing it myself cause I can't get one of them for $10.

Yea you're right there are some differences to the front of the engine, The majority of the rest is the same, coil, wires, water pump, plenum, an obviously all the internals

Thanks for all the replies, at the end I decide to go with a 120 amp alternator from the P38 with GEMS motor. Land Rover part number AMR 2938, even if it's used the price was right and the miles low. I'll let you know how it works!

Dunno, didn't work for me but the one I got was used, and could have been bad but it bench tested ok. I then got mine rebuilt for around $200, but that included new bearings, new stator and new voltage regulator as well. I would second Savannah's suggestion of getting the old one rebuilt.
