Any help on a Tranny swap?
Hey everyone! Well my $600 Land Rover Disco is starting to shift funny. There was no fluid on the stick when we checked, then put in about a quart. Checked it later, and it was right were it was supposed to be. WELL, while driving the other day, the tranny goes out and I checked the fluid. It was half way up the stick...It was 104 degrees out, and I was driving with the AC on, so the fluid probably expanded, but THAT much? After taking out a quart of fluid, it drove me home. But it once again takes a little too long to shift into 3rd and just overall sloppy.
I have decided since I only spent $600 and everything else is in pretty good shape on this thing, i'll actually do a tranny swap. I have found many great 5 speed R380 Gearboxes across the pond in the UK willing to ship. Even with the shipping cost, it's a reasonable price. Seeing as these cars came with manuals, but I believe all sold in the US were automatics, is there anything I have to do differently to install a manual gearbox over another auto? Aside from adding a clutch pedal and all of that. Thanks everyone!

Oh my, I thought it was the first thing I mentioned. It is a 1998. And yes, I was thinking that, but if my tranny is going at 90k miles, I dont know how much I would trust another used one haha. Most of the ones I find are 100k+ Although it could be because my truck was sitting in a few feet of water for a month (hence why it was so cheap)
An immersed vehicle has been subject to other fun things, like water inside the rear differential and axle (vent line is not very high), transfer case, etc. You might try a fluid change first (tranny, as well as all the other under truck fluids). But all the tranny fluid won't drain out, a considerable quantity remains in the torque converter. So you have to drain and refill with brief operation about three times. Lucas transmission fix could improve things as well. If the water it was immersed in was salty (Sandy storm area near coast), even more fun.
Yeah it was a sandy truck. I had the undercarriage cleaned and rear diff fluid was changed already. I planned on doing the tranny, but never got around to it. I'm going to change the fluid and filter and drive it till it does blow, but I would like a 5spd for off roading much more. Thats what I loved most about my Izusu when I went wheeling lol
