Well here's some better photos. You can see the skinny bolts securing the starter to the mounting plate have bent. The case is also actually cracked from hitting the U-joint. Finally you can see how the britishstarters.com starter clearly sits much lower than the stock starter. Rotating the starter may help, but this is how I received it and so how it was installed.

Bet those little cracks added to the case will let in just enough water to corrode things....

BTW, I guess you'll give SWMBO a Valentine treat and let her change the next starter...

I was thinking about moisture too so David from britishstarters has agreed to send a new one in exchange. Good company. I'll definitely rotate the new starter for better clearance.

Since I had the propshaft out for rebuid, it actually wasn't too bad getting it out. Being a non-corrosion, oil, and dirt covered freshly rebuilt engine helped too.

I am happy to hear they are replacing it for you. What was wrong with the original starter?

Looks like on the new one, the solenoid is on the side rather than on top of the starter?

What's wrong is that it sat too low when rotated as shipped. You can see the damage in the earlier pics.

The stock starter sticks out the side, whereas the britishstarters.com unit sticks out the bottom. It has a great mounting plate though, that allows you to rotate it to any position.

I received then new one very quickly, rotated it for better clearance, bolted it on, and now it works great.

Glad to hear that, you have been thru the wringer with that Discovery. Seeing how it is after market, probably made to fit multiple applications. Their litature should have included that!
