Default Burnt Rubber Smell

I changed my fuel filter a week ago, the old one had to have been at least a decade old. Had to sever the hoses, the barb attachments were rusted to hell. Got a new filter, and had to track down new barb plugs to attach new hoses. These barb plugs were not sufficient, and fuel leaked out all over the first time I drove it. Along with this came a strange burnt rubber smell coming from under the hood, and small amounts of smoke. I changed to a different fuel filter that doesn’t leak, the smell remains, even on short drives.

Research tells me this could be bad valve cover gaskets. But I’m convinced it’s something to do with the fuel line.
