Could a bad relay or crank sensor actually fry the fuel pump?

If you lost power to the fuel pump, I would suspect the wiring initially. Sounds like it may have been intermittent at first then went completely open. Take some readings with a simple multimeter, Lowes has a decent one for about 30 bucks for a rugged Greenlee meter.

You could jumper 12 volts directly to the pump from another battery or 12 volt source to see if the pumps is functional. It could be the ones you removed may still be good if they failed due to losing power a lot.

Replace the fuel pump relay, you are actually supposed to replace it along with the fuel pump, if it "trips" you will not get power to the fuel pump.

Yes a bad crank sensor will kill the fuel pump, that is one way the pump knows the engine is running.

I would definately suspect the relay. You can check power at the relay when you pull it out. Not sure which terminals on the relay are power and ground or which are signal wires as I have not had this problem yet but should be pretty easy to figure out with the wiring diagram.

Ok. So I am going to order the crankshaft position sensor and a the fuel pump relay.

Will this work?

Also where can I go cheap for both parts if this does not work?

The crankshaft position sensor doesnt look too tough to replace. I figure if both of these don't work then I'll look at the wiring harness.

It looks like I need to drop the tank to replace the harness though. I am like a 2 stars beyond oil change mechanic right now so this is concerning. I want to get it back on the road even if my fiance'e insists that I sell it and buy a Jeep.

Thanks for keeping this thread alive guys I love the truck and right now it's turning into yard art.

Also the very last time it was running I was offroad. I hit a huge rut and jolted the truck and it died. Before this it has stopped 15 min earlier on trail before going through ruts as well. I figured whatever was not working broke on that final jolt.

The inertia switch is up when I push down it doesn't go back down. My flashers etc didnt come on so I'm thinking it's not that.

So...

Relay
Crankshaft Sensor
Wiring Harness

I can do the above first two for about $100 I think. Would it just be smarter to get a tow to Landrover Dealer and have them diagnose? Arrgghhh this is getting frustrating.

Remember though previous I had put pumps in and they were dying at about one a week and they seemed to die after I hit bumps. This could be a coincidence though.

Take the Standard Motor Products PN to NAPA (or most any parts store) and they can cross over so you have a local source.

Are you replacing these yourself? Have you pulled the pump to check connections?

Did you replace the fuel line between the pump and the assembly? You may have gotten it too long and it is getting kinked. The assembly compresses a little when installed.

Remember that you only get a few second burst to the fuel pump when you turn the key on. Then it shuts off and you will not get anything. You have to check for voltage when the key is first turned on.
