Default code reader

Hi, new to forum... I am helping a friend with a 1997 Discovery. I was looking to by an error code reader. Any suggestions? I was looking at ultra-gauge & OBDCOM... thanks for quick response (i want to order something tonight)... i was also looking at Bluetooth ELM 327 Diagnostics USB Cable which i found on amazon... it got some pretty good reviews and is pretty cheap... here is a video of an android app Torque to see results on android device... looks pretty cool... any thoughts?

Here is another video...

The Ultra Gauge works when phone battery is dead, or phone is somewhere else, SWMBO is driving truck, phone is in use, etc. It can reset codes, and has programmed alarm points as well. You don't want to miss the engine coolant overheating alarm you set up.

The ability to store data and run comparisons to long term trends would be interesting. Such as running coolant temp after "X" minutes by initial intake air temp at cold start.

Eventually, since the "other" cpu's in the truck can be adressed via the OBDII port perhaps a "Hawkeye" ($600 tester) style app will emerge .

Amazon.com: OBDII Splitter Y Cable, J1962M to 2-J1962F, 1ft (145802): Automotive

Maybe get one of these as well. Then you could leave both plugged in all the time.
