Coolant and white smoke issues
Hello Good People,
Hoping All are doing well. My recent Rover concerns is I have been noticing some white smoke coming from the tailpipe when going from 1st gear to 2nd. I imagine I do not see it beyond that because at that point the truck is moving much faster.
I am not having to add coolant often, yet after driving I will check the coolant reservoir level which looks low. Upon slowly removing the reservoir cap the coolant level increases and looks to be at its proper level. I do not add more because I know it would be too much.
From time to time I may get error code P1316.
The truck does not over heat.
There is no coolant leak on the floor.
There is no coolant overflow from the reservoir.
What should I be looking at?

Remove the oil filler cap and look underneath it for a milky substance. Remove/inspect the spark plugs for a very 'clean' appearance (coolant and steam will clean them like new). If you find two plugs next to each other that look really clean, and the other's look normal, you will know which cylinder/s are at issue is (which area of the headgasket). Do you ever get 'gurgleing in your heater core, esp in the morning upon start-up ...or taking off the first time? Can you 'sniff'' and smell combustion odors when you sniff in the coolant tank?
These are telltale signs of coolant getting into the cylinders ...(failing headgasket/s). I have that on my Land Rover. Mine's been that way for years. Eventually the head gaskets will fail catastrophically and blow a big plume of white smoke.

Thanks for the response Mark G,
I did my headgaskets back in 2018 and was hoping that wasn't the issue again. I have not heard and gurgling in the heater core, and so far so good in terms of the oil not looking milky. Still I can smell the burning of coolant after a drive, have not noticed the smell of combustion odors from the coolant tank. Will keep an eye and nose on that.
Will keep an eye on this and report back.
Thanks
