Wife was sitting in the truck while my son was at practice, running the A/C on a warm evening. It overheated and she shut it down immediately. Seems to have developed a severe external coolant leak.



I don't have the time to do a head or valley gasket so it is off to the shop. We have a good independent shop nearby and I'm fairly confident I'll a solid opinion on what went wrong and what it will take to fix it, but it may not be worth it.

I'm bumming big time.

 

Well, that's not good!
I'd start it up and see if you have a leak in a hose or something simple first, that's quite a bit of coolant.
Valley pan is easy. Head Gasket is a little more labor intensive but not really hard. Of course paying a shop won't be cheap.

 

First thing I'd check is the intake manifold bolt tightness for the coolant leakage and then find out if the viscous or water pump is not up to par. Viscous should not turn freely with belt removed and warm. Water pump is usually the bearing and don't even have to remove the belt or fan, just pull up on it and see if there's play in bearing. Like hose leaks those are all easy things to check.

 

Valley pan gasket was all it was....thankfully.

I wish I could've done the work myself but I just don't have the infrastructure/garage. Had the front cover gasket done as well. Was at the shop when the rocker covers were off and I'm proud to say they were super clean without any buildup of any sort. Bottom end also looked clean.

Put 700 miles on it this weekend and it performed flawlessly.
