Cummins R2.8 engine swap question(s) for a 96 D1
Hello-
I've always wished one of my D1s was a diesel and have been researching an diesel engine swap for about a year now and although I like to do regular (modest) repairs I do not have the time, tools & expertise to pull this off.
I thought I would end up with an old 300tdi in one of my trucks but then I stumbled on the Cummins r2.8 videos on YouTube and watched the Cummins Cruise thinking, "That could be my D1!". This week I finally got around to calling a shop in Colorado where I live for a quote- the shop just completed an r2.8 swap for a Customer's Defender 110 and posted the video of the truck's maiden voyage- it looked and sounded great. I gave the sales rep my info and he said he'd get back to me once he talked to the shop's owner and gathered the information.
I knew the engine cost around $7600 because I can buy one directly from Cummins and have it delivered to my house so I was expecting the estimate to be North of $10k and (hoping) around $15K- which is not a small amount of money in my book.
When the shop rep called me back he said two things that squashed my enthusiasm:
1). That the engine was not "emissions legal" in the state of Colorado and a lot of work would be needed to make the conversion legal. What!!??
2). The total bill would be anywhere between $40-50K (with $10-15K in labor). WHAT!!??
Surely others have looked into such a conversion. I ran this idea by a buddy of mine from California who is a much better wrench than me and the first thing he asked was how I was going to pass emissions in Colorado. I assumed (wrongly?) that because it was a new crate engine going into an old vehicle there would be no issues other than writing a check (I'm old school) for the work.
What am I missing? $40-50K for an engine swap ain't gonna happen.
Anybody else in Colorado looked into a Cummins r2.8 for a D1 or other vehicle? I'd be interested to compare notes.
Regards,
brian

They don't mention colorado being an issue on their site.
https://www.cummins.com/engines/repower
Perhaps reach out to them directly or your state.
