Default Discovery Diesel Engine Swap

For some, this is a tired discussion. I wouldn't bother posting this question without it going down a different path those in the past.

It looks like I'll be taking my 2004 Discovery to the Middle East thanks to the Navy. Many have dreamed of diesels in our U.S. Discos, but engine availability and cost and labor make it largely impractical. However with living in Bahrain, I think 300tdi and TD5 engines / transmissions are easily available and labor rates over there are very cheap. My only concern about doing it there vs here in the U.S. is making sure it's legal (emissions) to bring back in when my tour is over.

Does any one know about the smog requirements for diesel engines in the states?

More importantly, which engine would folks recommend I pursue for the install - 200/300tdi vs TD5? My main goals for doing the engine swap are improving mileage, engine longevity and off-roading low-end torque. I'm happy to give up the zippy on road hp that the my gas guzzling V8 offers.

Any and all other thoughts and advice welcome. I'd love to hear from or connect with someone who has already completed the swap!

Thanks!!

Chris

I'd look for a Defender 110 over there instead of dealing with customs when you get back. If you find a good 110 and import it you could make a mint.

Thumbs up

I just saw a very impressive 110 at Premier Rover, one of the site's sponsors, last week. I should have taken a photo or two. It is owned by a Lt. Col. in the Marine Corp stationed at Miramar Marine Air Station. He bought it overseas and had it imported back on the government dime! Money well spent. He was making some incredible mods on it, including dual turbos, as I understand it. I was told that he bought it for around $40k and had another $40k in mods. Looked like he had alot of fun using it, definitley not a garage queen. Good luck and thanks for your service! Phil

You better get in touch with both your State DMV as well as the Feds. DOT. I don't think you can bring it back unless you stay there for a long time.
Let us know what you find out.

Diesel Discoveries were never imported to the US, it's very unlikely you will be able to get it back in to the states, even if you did the conversion before leaving.
Now, if you have a good friend who's a loadmaster on a cargo plane, and you keep it registered here for the whole time you're overseas.....

Default call them

Hey Chris, Sounds like a great idea. I have a 2004 DII also. The engine is a big POS. I will be converting mine in the near future to diesel. I am going make a veggie Disco... These guys also import defenders and series rovers. I can tell you that unless it's older than 25 years old, you will get it confiscated. Customs here in miami has a few defenders and they will end up being crushed. I would convert your's over to a diesel and enjoy it. I dont think a 4.6 would last a hour in the middel east heat...they cant even make it hear.. You will be making a great contribution to the enviorment..everytime i see that horizon well live feed i cant bring myself to drive my POS...15 Mpg It's criminal when you think about...About as stupid as the people who designed it...

Good luck , Chris

You know that you will have to replace the tranny/t-case also cause you can't run a diesel engine with your current ECU controlled tranny.

Default Thanks for the comments so far...

From reading similar threads, I do anticipate having to replace the tranny and/or transfer box. I know the extent of the job will largely depend on which motor I go with. I think the 300tdi will be a simpler swap, plus finding parts for it here in the states would be easier too. It looks like the TD5 has alot more crap on it.

Good recommendation on bringing back a 110. I'll definitely look into it - of course, it maybe turn out to be pretty painful to let it go once I do find one!

Another option might be to bring back all the gear (engine, trans, tbox) and do the swap back here in the states.

Keep the comments coming!

Thanks again.

Cheers,

Chris

The DOT/EPA allows for ONE lifetime exemption from importation regulations when bringing a car in the US from overseas. That's how you're able to see those newer Alfa Romeos, Peugeots, Maseratis, etc.
