Default D1 steering leak

My wife just called me and said the steering fluid leaked all out. Can I replace the seal or have to replace the entire box/pump? How bad is it?

First find out what's leaking, a hose is more common than a box (and much cheaper to replace) highly unlikely (though not impossible) for the seal to leak badly enough to dump all the fluid that fast.

I'll check when I get home. The wife is pregnant with my twins so she won't be crawling under the rover.

Start your check by looking under the hood, start at the reservoir and work your way down (visually) find the highest point of the leak and that's probably where the failure occurred. (The low pressure return line has a high failure rate too).

When was the last time you checked the fluid level?

I would refill it after a god visual and a cleanup and then start it and watch to see what happens.

You are aware that it uses transmission fluid and not power steering fluid aren't you?

The wife put power steering fluid before I could tell her it was tranny fluid. How bad is that.
