Default diff lock question

hey guys, I've got my transfer case on the bench. Ive been replacing all the seals and o-rings to stop the leaks. it came out of and automatic and it worked fine before I took it out aside from the leaks. With it on the bench I can't seem to shift it from high to low. I left the rover in park before I took it out. So I'm wondering does it have to be in neutral while trying to shift between high and low? thanks

Thanks Walt, I didn’t want to get it all back together and then have to do it over.

So, when we are driving, of course we should be in neutral and stopped or slow. Slow helps align the gear teeth.

But on the bench the TC will shift easily, so long as the teeth line up. The hi/lo shift mechanism can be viewed under the big cover. You should be able to fidget a bit and shift on the bench, and diff lock too.
