Ding ding when lights on
'98 Disco 1 NAS converted to 300TDI manual. When I turn the lights on -- either parking lights or headlights -- I get a beeping sound. It's not the steady note you get when the key is in the ignition and you open the door with the engine off, it's a chime. No warning lights on the dash, doors are closed tight. Any ideas would be appreciated. I searched on various forums and found nothing so far.
I recall something similar but it has been to long ago to recall exactly.
What gear are you in when the truck starts?
I think my chime was related to a sensor on the transmission. I went under the truck and cleaned up everything, used some electric connector spray cleaner, and reconnected whatever sensor, and the chime stopped.

It's a stickshift, I usually start in neutral. Interesting that you would flag that though: initially, the chime would start after I put it in first and started moving. And at first it only chimed when I had the parking lights on, not the headlights. Now it chimes most times, with either set of lights on, whether in gear or not...
Toran, I don't quite get it: what would the headlights have to do with a sensor on the transmission? Is there anything on a manual transmission that is linked to a chime? I did replace the clockspring recently, and the tach is working intermittently, but I'm not sure either may be connected to this problem. Maybe the light switch on the steering column? Thanks in advance for any input.
Hey petrhick,
Sadly this happened so long ago I do not recall the specifics. I only recall it happening 1 or 2 times. The sound was unusual as if to "BEHOLD make note of this never before heard chime". I do not recall if I was already doing something like messing with the window switches in the center console. I may have bumped something like the high low small shifter that is in front of your larger 5speed shifter.
What is the condition and level of your transmission fluid?
Let me think about it, if anything pops into memory I will post a response.
