Not really hazing we just all made the same mistake, bought a rover thinking it was like any other suv , we now know better lol

**** you want hostility try some of the other boards for rovers or they just flat out ignore you

This is by far the nicest rover board with some of the best guys willing to advise /help whatever imo

Luckily I don't half *** anything. People die when you half *** shyt. I'm a firm believer in attention to detail. Thanks for all the advise gents.

Yeah you can tell this was a fufu mom's grocery getter and then passed on to a teenage son.. In great shape cosmetically and decent shape mechanically other than noted issues. I drove her away when purchased even tho it had sat since March! New battery and gas. Got her home and did all the obvious fluid changes and seafoamed the fuel system (double dose) and crankcase before the oil change. Oil was maybe changed once a year on this thing. The build up and sludge was horrific. Drove her around town and she ran just fine. Highway, not so much... Hence the radiator replacement and head job.

Got the inside of valve covers cleaned up today (took baffles off to clean correctly). Cleaned up the heads before I drop them off tomorrow at my friends machine shop. Also chopped the brackets off the old rad but that's a different thread..

What are you using for fluids?

I run royal purple 75/140? ( or whatever that weight is) in diffs and transfer case makes big difference in winter

Valvoline at+4 in trans

Rotella t in engine, 15/40 summer and the lighter grade in winter

The rocker assemblies I tore down and cleaned on a fine brass wire wheel then reassembled with oil, eaxact order the parts came off, rockers are L and R per cylinder, check for worn or missing rocker tips they fall off and give a nasty tap

My threads long but lots of pics and info

I run Lucas oils in all my rigs and scoots. Lucas 10/30 for engine plus their oil stabilizer, Lucas 80/140 for axles and t-case, Lucas multi vehicle atf with the conditioner. Hasn't done me wrong.

Yeah the rockers and everything else at that were hit with the brass wire wheel attachment. I stamped every part as to what side it goes on and what position. I let everything soak for 2 days in gasoline and scrubbed off initial grime/sludge with brass wire brush then followed it with the brass zip wheel. Disassembled then sprayed cleaning compound in all the passages on the rockers and heads then blew them out with the compressor. I'll coat the rockers in oil before and after putting them back on the head. All kinds of nastiness came out of those little passages. Valves had decent carbon build up but no scoring or distortion. Gonna hit the pistons with the brass zip wheel today. I'm gonna rotate the crank by hand to be able to get each piston at the top stroke for easier access to clean. One at a time...... My engine already ran pretty smooth after fixing the high idle issue due to vacuum leaks. Hopefully this will make it even more stabile.

Any other suggestions other than oil pan/pump and timing chain? TIA.

this engine is designed to run on 15w/40 diesel specific oil like rotella, keep the engine from sludgeing up, the diesel oil has something that traps dirt /soot and allows it to be carried to the filter iirc I would not consider these precision engines lol

there are "bearings" in the rockers that need oil when assembling the units, they get messed up / scored you end up with what sounds like valve taps

Yeah I noticed the oil passages on the rockers. Cleaned and blew them all out. I will let them soak in oil before installing them on the heads.

I will give the 15/40 a whirl. I'll still add the lucas oil additve/stabilizer (gives me piece of mind). Can never get too much protection.

Did this hg job while back, I read and read anything hg on here. I got the kit from Atlantic brit, it came with new head bolts. Took the heads to be cleaned and re-surf, rad to a rad shop for an acid wash. Got the Toyota fan motors, state gave me money to fix timing and a tune up. She runs smooth now, no over heat.

Lots of cleaning and porting/polishing(smoothing out) intake manifold and heads. Heads came back from shop with a clean bill of health. ***** yeah! Also picked up a 4.6 crank, rods off a 97RR and some Volvo 831 injectors at my local dismantler. Love that place... Thanks for the tip on gaining some extra ponies guys. No luck with the Toyota electric fans (one of mine is bad). Will try a different junk yard. Almost done with all the cleaning and parts replacement. I hope to be done this weekend (wishful thinking.....).

Hope it All works out, I did not have the $ for the 4.6 upgrade wish I did at the time

The Volvo injectors definitely make her run smoother, and accelerate smoother
