Talking Disco 1 Rear Driveshaft Conversion

Hi guys - I have a damaged rear pinion, and rotoflex. So I'm thinking of doing the driveshaft conversion to u-joints. (some of you may have seen me post on the LROA facebook page about it).

I'm wondering, for those that have done it... How difficult was it to remove the pinion and what tools can be used instead of the specialty LR tool.
Its a 96 D1. Thanks!

I would just swap in a good used 3rd member. Would require none of the nut roll that replacing a pinion gear would entail.

Probably an hour or two to be back motoring around.

Check with Paul Grant he provides quality used bits.

Agree with army. I pulled a used diff and prop shaft off another junk car to swap mine. It is a good option!

I did this swap. Make sure if you order a kit that it comes with the proper spacer (not all of them do). This spacer will go in before the new flange. Without this spacer you will be unable to get the proper preload on the pinion bearing. The video below shows how to administer the repair along with some tricks, but does not mention the spacer. In summary, had two D1's, green was rotoflex and white was u-joint. Used a kit that did not have the spacer, ended up having to tear it all back apart to grab the spacer from the white disco.

If you need the four bolt flange with the spacer, I have used ones sitting on the shelf. If you also need a used rear driveshaft to complete the swap, I have those too.

It can be a ball ache to swap it over but if whole assemblies are hard to come by then it's not that hard but follow the video tutorial posted and you'll be golden.

Get the kit from Paul and its about 2 hours of your time, well worth the time. If you have a friend with a lift makes it even easier!
