Default Disco 1 Restoration

I’m going to be buying back my disco from my friend and this time around I plan to make some cosmetic repairs since the first time around I could only afford to fix mechanical issues.

Anyone know a good source for replacing the shift cover plate? The plastic is all cracked around it. I also plan to replace the cup holder unit since it no longer fully retracts. Is this a common issue with a simple fix like the springs in the door locks for actuators that don’t fully unlock? Or does it require replacing the whole unit?

Also if anyone has experience replacing the headliner on a car with both sunroofs any advice would be appreciated!

I'd suggest you reach out to Will Tillery or any other LR recycler for the parts you may need.

The retractable cupholders are not supposed to fully come out. They come out halfway and then you pull the lower part out manually. If the whole unit isn’t functioning, you can easily pull the unit out after first removing the ash tray. There’s a little plastic arm/switch thing that might be broken.

now that is funny to find out. I spent hours trying to make mine come all the way out, and I did eventually get it to. clocked the spring and a rivet and it now comes all the way out. I just thought it was another broken quirk on my rover.

yeah haha mine don’t fully retract so the cup holders are seated back in the dash. i’m able to push them back in so that they’re still sticking out like an inch instead of fully seating within the dash. good to know about the ashtray tho thanks!

the headliner is not attached to the sunroofs at all. No special instructions needed.

I've done it twice. My best tips.
- use a cheap bbq wire brush to remove old glue and foam from the fiber board
- use good glue. allow it to sit before applying fabric/foam to board
- wrap the new headliner material over the outside of the fiber board by 1-2" and glue it down. this helps prevent wind/air from forcing apart the foam from the fabric
- start the fabric in the middle of the board and work to the front and back. Only work on sections 12-18" wide at one time.
- You will need to stretch the material into the front corners of the board. Go slow, make sure your glue is ready to set (not too wet, not too dry). You only get one shot at these areas.
- inspect your sunroof drains while the headliner is out
- consider applying heat resistant material to your roof as you would the inside of the bonnet
- run new speaker wires or power wires for extra USB charging ports as needed.

I believe Atlantic British sells the shift cover plate for the automatics, but it comes as a whole unit for $400
