Default Discovery 1 U Joints

Should I change my U joints periodically as a maintenance move? I have not had them changed in 100,000 miles. How can tell when they are bad? I thought I had checked them properly in my 2000 Range Rover and they seemed fine. I went on a 500 mile trip and started hearing a sound coming from the drive train and within that distance one snapped and beat the under carriage all to hell, including the transmission pan. I don't want that to happen again.
Thanks.

Are you having any symptoms such as clunking or play in the driveshaft? have you been greasing them at the correct intervals? I had one go bad so I rebuilt both the front and rear driveshafts just to be on the safe side and that way I knew when they were done, how they were done, and I could guarantee that from here on out they are serviced every oil change. Just my 2 cents.

They need to be lubed at least twice a year, if they haven't been and you have a few extra $$$'s then I would say yes.

Changing out u-joints is cheap insurance from what could be a serious problem. I tried to grease my u-joints at every oil change but it didn't always happen but I did get them greased 3-4 times per year.

Go ahead and change them and they will last another 100k.
Like AK said, cheap insurance.

That's the best way to handle it.

If you can grease them and get new grease to come from around all 4 seals on each u-joint, then grease them but still replace them before long.

If you can't get new grease to come from around all 4 seals, then replace them ASAP.
