Default Discovery capabilities/tire/lift

I'm new to the Land Rover world. I've had 7 Jeeps and have done my fair share of off roading in them. I would really like to take my 97 Discovery to some of the trails I have taken my jeeps too.

What is a good tire/lift combo that does not require and other modifications besides the lift? Is this combo worth it? Am I going to wish I had more? Here is a link to one of the trails. http://www.thecliffsinsaneterrain.com/

These trucks are stock diesel Discovery's.

A 2" lift and 245/75/16 are all you need to do 95% of the offroading you want to do.
These trucks are more capable stock than a moderately modified Jeep.

Yes, exact same.
The only difference is the safety and expedition gear, meaning winch bumper, roof rack, rear ladder, otherwise 100% factory.
And LR makes and sells diesels everywhere except North America so they are not special engines or anything.
Oh, those trucks are also 5speeds not automatics, but once again LR sells manual transmissions everywhere but the US.

My best advice to you right now is to do all the maintenance and repairs needed to bring your truck up to as close to new condition as possible and then take it wheeling and see what you need.

At the most these guys have a 2" lift.

it's pretty much there. It has a newer motor with 40,000 miles. Its at the mechanics right now getting all the bugs worked out on it. It should be ready tomorrow. When the weather gets warmer, I'll change the engine, trans, trasfer case and axle fluid.

I have not looked under the Discovery yet. Does it come with factory skid plates?

No skid plates, everything is tucked nicely inside the frame rails so almost nothing hangs down in harms way.
Steering and gas tank or the most vulnerable.

The DI was a purpose built truck, its purpose was to go offroad.
But to make money they added luxury to enter the exploding SUV market in the US but they kept it a offroad truck designed to be repaired in the field, or jungle, artic, where ever it may be.
So the DI is very simple, rugged and easy to repair.
You must use premium gas though, it is required, if you do not use it you will damage the engine.

I love youtube...

The Land Rover Defender and the Discovery Series I are basically the same truck, just different bodies and wheel base.

The Defender is the number 1 military vehicle in the rest of the world.

Love the jeep and land rover video. If you want to compare a land rover to a jeep though it has to be with a rubicon.

You really have to use premium? I've heard mixed reviews on that.
