Default Drive without VSS installed?

Quick question... my replacement VSS crapped out and fell apart when I took it out this evening... someone may have overtightened it

That someone may have been me.

Can I drive without the vss physically in the vehicle? Are there any ramifications without having the sensor in the hole so to speak?

As a temporary measure I would cover the spot on the tcase where the shaft from the VSS enters to prevent dirt from entering.

The truck will run just fine but the speedo will not work.

Thanks for the replies. I was worried that without the VSS physically installed it may cause an issue. I had already disconnected the electrical connector, but had left the VSS still bolted in.

Here is one odd question:

Is there a bloody washer that is supposed to go with the VSS?

I have seen some websites from the UK with a washer for the VSS (aka, Vehicle Speed transducer) but none here. It appears the washer would stop ingress of foreign matter in to the transmission and VSS.
