Default Dying after a few seconds.

I got my 99 D1 project starting pretty consistently today. Feeling pretty accomplished, I drove to get some power steering fluid, brake fluid, and a few other things (in a different car). When I got home I started it up. Took a little while but started with little trouble. However, a few seconds later I just died. I started it again. Started right up, but the same thing happened again. Put jumper cables on, and tried a third time, did the same thing, but this time the oil light came on. I checked the oil level and all looked good. Tried one final time and the same thing happened. What’s going on?

Start with basics, fuel spark compression....my guess would be the fuel. Check and see if you have fuel at the rail schrader valve, (before pressing the center pin, wear glasses and put a towel over it to keep the fuel from spraying at you should be enough pressure to squirt about 8 inches or more) and if the pump is running when you first turn on the key. It should run for about 10-15 seconds. It stays on if it detects the engine is running. As dumb as it sounds, make sure there is gas in the tank too. Been there!! Also check the roll over valve on the firewall. i had one drive me crazy only to find out the connections on the wires to the valve were burned and once it warmed up, it would quit. When it cooled down, it would run.

What is the rollover valve? Where is it located?

MAF plugged in? Air/fuel/spark are the 3 things needed for an engine to run. Will it continue to run if you give it some throttle or does it also die? Any fault codes being stored or pending codes? P0340 is one I'd be looking for with it acting like that. Could possibly be CPS or CKPS related. If either one acts up you could have a no start or fail to run issues.

When I give it throttle it does stay on. I’ve been thinking along the lines of crankshaft sensor. I went out again this morning and it fired right up and stayed on. I left it running for a few minutes, then cut it off and tried again. Had the same issue. I looked at what I believe to be the crank shaft sensor under the car. The wires looked like they had been chewed on by some rodent, but I’m not certain it’s the crankshaft sensor I was looking at.

Yes that is the CPS, I would repair that wiring (same harness = fog light) heat makes the insulation just fall apart. If you give it throttle and it keeps running I would double check the TPS, MAF sensor plugs, also try to get an OBD2 reader and see if you have any codes.

Rollover valve is on the firewall, passenger side of center and has 2 wires going to it. it's job is to shut off the fuel pump when you roll the truck upside down. There is a rubber cap on the top for resetting it. I put a jumper between the 2 wires and left it that way for 7 years. no problem. just don't roll over the truck.....
