Mine had the same symptoms and after much ado I found that the steel insert in 2 of the rocker arms(where the push rod ball end fits) was loose at running temp but not loose @ cold start temp....and causing the "tapping / knocking". keep us posted with what you find.

That is good to know. What did it take to resolve it? How involved was that to fix?

2 new rocker arms ( there are 8 lh and 8 rh in all, 4+4 of each on each side.)
removed the valve cover and with the engine running (DONT TRY THIS @ HOME KIDS ) I pushed on each rocker arm untill the noise stopped.
Removed the 4 bolts holding down the rockershaft assy. Remove the cotter pin from one end and just disassembled the parts far enough to replace the noisy culprits. the the rocker shaft towers are barely a press fit on the shaft....I used the springs and rocker arms to "slide hammer" them off if you know what I mean. Reassembly is pretty easy , just make sure to have the pushrods seated in the lifters and the rockers as you gradually tighten the rocker assy bolts back down to spec. The problem side is the driver's side as you need to remove the plenum and then reinstall it to run the engine. All in all not a bad job...only a few tools..and an hour+ in time
after the rocker arms cooled off on the workbench the inserts "tightened" back up but if you warmed them up with a heat gun...they started "rattleing" again.
If I had the $$$$ , they make all steel rocker arms with no inserts...I would use those probably as a whole set. Trevor @ rovahfarm can get them

We used to do a similar adjustment on our 1975 Chevy Heavy Half with a 350.
She would start to tick when warm.
Remove the valve covers, and with the engine running and at temp you tightened the rocker arms until the noise was gone.
Put the valve covers back and she was good for another year or so.

Default Engine Noise

Tried tapping cats hot and cold, no change. All new exhaust manifold bolts and gaskets nothing loose. I am using 15w40 Rotella. I think I'll pull the left valve cover and check the Rocker arms and shaft.
