Default Engine stalls when put in gear

98 D1 runs great but it stalls when put in gear. I have had no problems with the shifting lately but I let my friend drive it home the other night and when he brought it back he said it was shifting weird( no details ) stalled a few times when he put it in reverse. Now it stalls every time you put it in gear. It lopes in power before it stalls so maybe the torque converter is locking up but I hope it is a sensor issue. A week or so ago it idled high 2 times that I drove it so maybe the TPS is faulty. I have a 96 D1 for parts but I thought I would drop a line to see if I could get some help with the diagnostic without having to haul it to the shop.

Check tranny fluid level. Does it just do it in reverse?

Check fuel supply (fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump) - schrader valve to attach PSI guage on fuel rail.

Could be senosrs, but seems like you would get a code. You might want to clean the idle air control valve, look for vacuum leaks.

Just some places to start thinking about.

What is the idle speed when not in gear?

It idles fine when in park. It started in reverse. Now it does it every time you put it in gear. I pulled the engine from the 96 and put it in the 98 last year. I checked all the electrical connections and vacuum hoses then. It has been running great for 6500 miles. No service lights are on. I wont have time to check it out until Monday but thanks for the ideas so far.

We need to know the exact RPM when at idle.
This sounds like a IACV issue.
If it is not compensating for the extra load on the engine while in gear at idle it will stall.
So we need to know the exact idle speed.
Second, if you keep your foot on the gas will it run even while in gear?

First place I would check is the plugs for fouling under load.

It idles about right between 800-900 with no misfire. It stalls as soon as you put it in gear whether you give it gas or not. It is almost like it shuts off. There are no lights on. There have been no signs lately that it might have trouble except a high idle a few weeks ago. For one short drive into town (5-6) miles it was idling about 1200 when I came to a stop. it did it again later that day or the next day I don't remember but it never did it again.

IMHO the IACV needs attention. Cleaning, or outright replacement. I think it is a common model shared by other brands of vehicles as well. The high idle speed is common with IACV problems, they are basically a precise controlled vacuum leak. Next on the list would be throttle position sensor, but many times it will throw codes.

Torque Converter.......Boo! Good thing I have a 96 tranny in the back yard but too bad this job is going to suck. At least it is cooling off a bit in the shop! Back to the grind

New here, whats a IACV? I too have this problem. More in reverse, but also stalls (feel and see the RPMS go down) when I stop at a traffic light.

I am told my intake valves are leaking and need replacing. Also notice my fuel level is dropping faster than normal. Any thoughts? I really cannot afford putting any more money in this 2003 Discovery. It's a lemon!

I read a few posts about fuel pressure regulators, and MAP sensors, could it be either of those?
