Engine ticking
Quote I got today was for a kit. Kit includes Cam (50229), cam gear, chain, set of lifters, spacers, assembly lube and oil additive for the break in period might have been a couple of other washers and bolts as well. Cost is $600 plus shipping.
You only drive it a few miles a day, right? I would ignore the tick, hell just about every Rover out there has some kind of tick or rattle or tap or weird noise coming from somewhere.
Does it quiet down when you give it some gas? I would go ahead and drive it, you probably got years left on it. If you get carried away, you'll end up with a gigantic growing teardown on your hands with no guarantees there either. (Think Eric.)
If you are determined to do the engine, I would go ahead and price one done by those guys at D&D Fabrication. I remember looking at their site and they were impressive. See what they would send you a fresh one for.
Also make sure it is not an exhaust leak giving you the noise, like a y-pipe gasket or something simple before you go ripping engines apart. You're getting awfully brave jumping into that degree of effort.
danny, i'm not tearing it down....i'm not that brave or dumb.
possibly i could work some barter deal to have it done..but i'm not going there yet.
i'm still congratulating myself for oil, plugs and wires.

Wow! I was thinking more in the $400 range...
Now get a few more quotes to see where they come in at.
