Fluctuating idle and engine stalling after start up- problem solved.
One of my 96 D1s .
I had been struggling with my "high mileage" D1 for the past few weeks after she came down with a bad case of rough idle, misfiring and stalling shortly after start up.
The idle problem started after the starter went out and was replaced.
First thing I did was clean the IACV- it was full of oil and hardened deposits. Once reattached and started the idle problems still existed- the vehicle was basically undrivable since it would lurch at speeds below 20mph and the engine would stall out at every stop sign.
I then replaced plugs/wires and O2 sensors- no difference in engine performance.
Then I got a new IACV from the local parts store with knowledge from this forum that I could use an IACV from a Jeep vehicle- $60. Once attached the vehicle still idled radically up and down. I put my original IACV back on.
I tightened my throttle cable thinking I needed more air to keep the vehicle from stalling- huge mistake.
Robertf then replied to my cry for help and advised me to reset the adaptives with the help of his GEMS app. That reset made a huge improvement in idle stability, but I still stalled out while in park after a few minutes in my driveway.
I then added the stack back to my throttle cable and began swapping the new IACV with the original. After adjusting my throttle cable to have slack I noticed that the vehicle was suddenly stable at idle in park with the new IACV vs stalling with my old IACV.
Problem solved.
No stalling at stop lights and I drove her to work doing 70 down the hwy.
It's possible I had a stuck IACV all the time but didn't notice without resetting the adaptives first. A big mistake I made was going down the road of trying to adjust the throttle cable to account for the engine stalling.
Thanks to all who have advise.
