Default front wheel bearing advice.

I just did brakes, swivel ball overhaul, and wheel bearings. I have a ton of play in the hub. With the wheel on i get almost a quarter inch of movement by pressing in on the top of the tire. This can't be normal right? Probably shouldn't have driven around the block like this...

I torqued the first nut to 64lb and then backed it off to snug.(I can't remember the torque specs right now but when i was reading it it was very low. Then lock washer and locknut torqued to 64lb. I did it this way to both sides and the other side is solid. Theres nothing else i can think of that would cause that right? I just need to tighten up the first nut? Or is there something else i should check when i take it apart again?

thanks!

You just need to re-tighten that hub. You may have left it too loose or the bearing race(s) may not have been fully seated.
You should tighten the inner nut really tight while rotating the hub, to the point it makes it harder to turn, back it off and repeat a couple of times, before the final tightening.
You should have the barest detectable end float. Then the lock washer and outer nut.
Be aware that some nut threads are loose enough that the installing the outer nut will cause the inner to move inward and take out the end float.

follow that, I usually make sure tighten and spin back off repeat a few times , fresh packed bearings got to squeeze out the grease

The big washer should be able to move with a screwdriver, should be loose enough, don't think I have ever used foot lbs on wheel bearings

I will try this tonight. I should probably do both sides as the other side has a tiny amount of play.

another silly question probably on the drive flange gaskets. I had a couple extra ones but they ripped because they are so thin and flimsy. Can i use the paper gasket sheets and cut out my own? the stuff i have is much thicker then the originals.

thanks!

I've always used the paper gaskets with Hylomar, but rtv will work.

Might want to check the u-joints in the steering column to gear, they could cause that too, easy to overlook.
