Hi Peeps!!!

Doing a Coolant System drain, thermostat (failed) replacement. When I removed the thermostat housing there was a "gasket" - but it looked like it was hand made - and not well done at that. When I picked up a new thermostat the parts store stated they didn't carry (NYA- Not Yet Available) a gasket. My assumption is that using a gasket making RTV Silicone will work just fine -

I purchased the "Ultra Black" version of the RTV Silicone -

My question - Is this the best gasket maker for the project or should I have purchased the blue or other version/brand? The one I purchased is "Permatex" brand.

My NAPA had the t-stat and gasket in stock. Not sure why though. Most any RTV sealant/gasket maker will work.

 

RTV works, but should be used in very small quantities. It finds it's way throughout the system your sealing and causes damage. I always make my own gaskets, whether they look good or not, if they seal thats all you need it to do. I use Indian Head gasket sshellack on the metal and then place the gasket down, then coat another layer of Indian head and bolt it down. Never a leak and never a problem with contaminating the system with RTV.

 

In the tech section AntiChrist has provided us with the part number for the gasket for the t-stat.
You have to ask for the part number not the application, you will find this alot when buying parts for your truck from a non Rover supplier.
Otherwise you can order the gasket from AtlanticBritish for like a $1 plug shipping.
But if you order other crap to you can save on shipping.

Why not get a sheet of gasket material and make a new gasket yourself?
