Tappets Should easily come out with a magnet.

 

I've read that they can mushroom a bit at the bottom and won't come out unless you remove the cam and pull them out the bottom. I have no idea if mine are like that though.

 

if your replacing head gaskets why would you remove the lifters?

 

Only thing I can think of is general purpose cleaning.

Jack the frame up and let the front axle droop on the ground, then the oil pan can be dropped and extracted from over top of the axle, right out the front.

 

They can and do become mushroomed and then they have to be dropped out through the cam bore. If they're mushroomed without question just replace them, the cam, bearings and the pushrods. Go aftermarket on the cam and SB Buick on the lifters. You'll get a little more lift out of your valves and the top end will remain in action long after your in a pine box.....

 

Let me tell you, when SB did his head gaskets I was looking for a soft wall to bang my head into. Not only did he take forever to get it done but he found the wrong torque specs (DII) and stripped his intake bolt hole threads out. Can you say "Threadserts?", synonymous with "Savannah Buzz" in my pea sized brain. It was a valiant effort nonetheless.........bam, bam, bam, bam, bam......

 

Cleaning the lifters/tappets is just common sense..... You're already there, that's why!
