Ok, what I was seeing was the braided wire that wraps around both the other wires... WTF is that, a heat distribution measure? The green wire is brittle and cracking, and you can see the portion I broke off of it with my thumb nail, I will re-run new wires to both, but what WAS the braided wrap of copper around them for? Anyone?

It's metal braid sleeving. You'll see it used in applications such as protecting wires and cables, providing a grounding device, covering hoses, etc. It can commonly be found in high end automobile and motorcycle applications.

In the case of this braid it's grounded and providing electronic/electrical shielding of the sensor signal, sensor voltage (brown and green wires). Very important it is grounded.
