high idle troubleshooting
Well my VSS is going I have the sputtering problem and when it happens my speedo is reading 70mph and my scan gauge is reading 188mph, I am going to try the rebuild process as soon as i get some down time from work.
I will clean the MAF the iacv is clean since its brand new then i will disconnect the battery for an hour or 2.

Not true. But you are correct to be concerned. The MAF heats a small part inside to 350F above ambient. If you spray cold made-for-MAF spray on that hot part, the heat stress certainly can fracture it. The MAF is also powered up with the other sensors when you go to position 2 on the ignition. So DIY Dude turns on the key to check something in the garage, turns off the key, and shoots the sherbert to it. That sensor has not cooled off. Bad things happen to a sensor that sells for $1400. After cleaning expect erratic starting the first few times.
OK to clean it with made for MAF spray, when sensor has not been powered up overnight. I have cleaned mine a few times, plus ones in other vehicles.
Don't use something you have sitting around, like carb cleaner, brake parts cleaner, electronic cleaner.
You can drive truck without VSS connected.
Here's a pix of an earlier style of MAF sensor, one of the tiny spots is heated, then the difference in resistance is measured as air flows over the two items, and the mass of the air flow is calculated. BTW, those who go wading with their Rover, and get a slug of cold mountain stream water down the MAF risk the same problem.
I have a spare MAF from the boneyard, which at $29 was cheap insurance.
And be sure that you depress the hood alarm switch before re-connect of battery. Best if truck left unlocked during the whole process.

One other thing - the MAF measures airflow by the difference in temperature it measures internally, but it compares that temperature to that measured by the intake air temperature. If that's not measuring correctly, it could cause similar problems.
At the very least, check & clean. I haven't used a scanner on my truck yet, so I don't know if it would give you the reading from the sensor, although I would think it would.

On a D1 the IAT is a separate sensor plugged in the side of the air filter box. On a D2 it is part of the MAF assembly. Both the IAT and the ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensors should show about ambient at start up.
checked it this AM before heading to work both IAT and coolant temp matched ambient outside temp on startup.
