Default Idle Air Control Valve

I have a 1999 Disco 1. I pulled the IAC to check for gunk but found a PVC cover over the pintle. Is this supposed to be there or is this supposed to be a metal to metal fit? The PVC resembles a cover that end mills or drill bits are sometimes dipped in for protection.

Sounds like maybe it was installed with the protective shipping cap still on it. Only thing I can think of since I have never seen one with a plastic or rubber tip, not on any make or model.

Does it look sturdy enough to withstand normal operation, or is it really flimsy like the tip was dipped in the stuff they use to coat plier handles. PlastiDip or some such? If it looks flimsy or like it's coming off remove it.

Mine is metal as well. It shipped with a protective cap on it. I removed that to match the one I pulled out.

FWIW, the LR shop told me I only completed half the job. I was told that after replacing the IACV something in the ECU needed to be reset and then the idle needed adjusting.

Please take some pics of it, that is one area I am very weak on.

I have yet to deal with mine.

Well, they were half right also. Sometimes(MOST times) after replacing the IACV with a new one, the adaptive memory in the ecu needs reset. But when you do that, the ecu "learns" the new IACV and will idle properly, with no further intervention.

Can the adaptive memory be reset by disconnecting battery overnight and leaving something like a dome light on, to drain off capacitors, etc. ?

You can force it to relearn.

If it is truly ADAPTIVE you would not need to reset anything, it would ADAPT.

The only problem with that method is that it takes time, days or even weeks and until it adapts how do you keep your engine running?
Or from revving ridiculously high?
80% of the time the new IACV will work right out of the box.
