So I bought my first vehicle which happens to be a Land Rover discovery. When I got it there were some problems and I expected that; however I am having trouble getting a reading from the mass airflow sensor and I am not getting any error codes. On top of that it idles high (approx: 1000 rpm's vs 700-750 according the the service manual). I haven't faintest clue how to correct this or how to flash the ecu which is what I've been trying to figure out but haven't had much success in doing so. I really need some help with this.

 

I think effectively the mass airflow sensor has been turned off or something to that effect.

 

You need to provide a little more back ground of your truck and situation if you want some help.
How are you getting a reading on your Mass Air flow? How and why did you arrive at its failure? How is it running otherwise? What sort of maintenance has been done up until this point? Has it been sitting or daily driven? Milage? Engine condition? Has anything else been replaced or worked on? What else have you checked? Have you verified electrical connections as good? Tested resistance/conductivity of wiring?

 

Okay so I have the odb plug that connects my Disco to my laptop and the software allows me to check the fault codes and instrument readings such as the Mass airflow sensor's throughput. I'm not getting a reading there. As for back ground all I know is that the engine was rebuilt two months before I bought the Land Rover and I have replaced the mass airflow sensor. I drive it daily and it has about 110000 miles on it and it's idle is kind of erratic. Sometimes it idles perfectly and sometimes it seems like the engine is wanting to die (which I assume is due to the fact that there is no strategy for dealing with a lack of mass airflow sensor on in the GEMS engine... or at least thats what I've read.) And it did sit for sometime prior to my purchasing it... like 5 years.

 

Off the cuff I'd look into why the sensor isn't reporting to the computer. I'd also search this forum and others to see if there is a testing procedure on the MAS itself so you can rule out a faulty new part. Then I'd be checking the connections and wiring to the sensor. Once the sensor and it's pathway to the ecm is confirmed good then start looking at flashing ECM procedures. Start simple then work into complex.
