Default intake gasket replacement

ok my intake valley has been leaking bad for a while and we want to fix the leak, I have an intake set from atlantic brit, and printed the 3 pages from the rave manual I need for bolt sequences

questions are

1) the torque specs in the rave are in NM whats that? all my t wrenches are inch or foot pounds

2) they are clear as mudd where they want rtv put on the gasket, is permatex ultra grey rtv ok?

3) is there anything I should look at while the intake and valve covers are off? i do have a valve tap on the pass side in the back

something else I should clean? inside the intake and plenum?

looking to do this sunday so any help is apriciated, I have done intakes before on v8 olds, pontiac, chevy etc. so not my first rodeo this is just not an american engine like I am used to

Actually it is a Buick design from the late 50's. You'll be right at home.

1 newton meter = 0.737562149 foot pounds for conversion.

You'ld want to look at the valve train, might have rocker arm problem, etc. Or lifters.

The four corner passages are the coolant channels. The lower edge of the valley front and rear are like a lip seal (not part of main gasket).

Keep up with all your tools, this one pix shows a wrench left behind that was a souce of "the tick".

Having some carb cleaner to clean up the intake and PCV system might be handy. Poke a rod down the oil galley drains when covers are off if sludged.

Post pix and have fun!

i am hoping I don't open it and see a bunch of sludge

ok so by the look of the one pic i need to use adheasive between the new gasket and the engine, do I also need it between the gasket and the intake?

looks like the usual places along the front and back of the engine and the 4 corners where the heads meet the block

what is an equivalent to the "hylomar" sealant the book says to use between the intake and plenum?

Isn't hylomar still available ? How about Permatex ? It's just gasket sealer. I seem to remember you only needed it on the four corners where the head, block and manifold meet.

I rebuilt my motor in oct and used permetex black on the valley gasket corners where hylomar was called for and and proud to say 4200 miles later my engine has absolutely zero leaks. I would recommend it.

THINK I know what my valve tap is, the last rocker on the pass side ( where the noise comes from) has excessive play and the small pin tip where it contacts the valve stem appears to be driven completely into the rocker arm unlike all the rest on the engine

engine is nice and clean inside no chunks of crap like i was concerned would be there, everything is just a varnish color

The Hylomar is for the where the upper part of the intake plenum bolts to the lower part of the intake manifold (the black rectangular thing with "Land Rover" cast into it, not where the intake bolts to the heads and block.

i did notice a few things while taking apart the engine, the vacume line for the fuel pressure regulator was disconnected I have had a hard start issue for a while

and not sure where the intake gasket was leaking oil from but the valley cover was bulged out

we forgot to bolt the wiring harness to the intake befor installing the upper plenum will this be a problem? do I need to take the plenum back off?
