Default Intermittent Speedo and Odometer

I recently acquired a 96 Disco 1 from spain. Upon my reception in Hawai'i I found that the speedometer and odometer only worked 40%ish of the time. I read through threads and assumed it was the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). I replaced the VSS with a new genuine LR VSS but still not working all the time (ouch). I took out the speedometer assembly and cleaned all the connections to and from but again it isn't working. Same with connections to the VSS, cleaned but no dice. All the other gauges work, Temp, tactometer, fuel level.
Thinking of buying a new to me (used) speedometer. Looking for any ideas before I try to source one. Wiring perhaps?
Thanks

Thanks for your reply, I'm not exactly sure how to find the ground. I downloaded the electric manual but it didn't have much to say that I found. Admittedly even if it did I have trouble understanding that manual...

The Electrical Manual is a little difficult to wade through, but very thorough. If you spend a little time with it I think it will start to make sense. The connectors all have numbers, and there is a photo of every connector showing it’s location.

And I’m basing what I said on the Disco 2 and P38 manuals, assuming the D1 is similar.
