erratic speedometer?

erratic speedometer?
Hi all,
My speedometer has suddenly acted erratic. When I pull away from a stop it seems to not register the speed I am travelling at, and sometimes will bounce a bit, and other times will register normally.
Could this be a simple fix? I recall with my Series Land Rover that I had to drop a few drops of oil down the cable as it was sticking somewhere, and that seemed to fix it, but the discoveries are a different animal.
Thank you.

Correct. There is no longer a mechanical speedometer cable. And.... the VSS can act up and make truck shut down engine, because ECU believes you are exceeding escape velocity. Normally does this around 114 mph, but will do it at lower speeds when failing. You can unplug it and drive, no speedo or cruise.

Hi, Tom R. I tried to search the General Tech Help section for the rebuild of the VSS that you cited, but I can't find the thread. I found a reply by Savannah Buzz on 8/17/2011 to a speedometer post by "asikuy" that references to LR electronics manual, but no thread on a speed sensor rebuild.
If you remember an approximate date or more specific title to the VSS thread, I'd appreciate it. I'm still new to the Forum and learning how to navigate it.
I already paid to have my VSS replaced, and I trust that it was repaired well. But, I'm just curious what it would've taken to rebuild it. Not sure if it even could've been rebuilt b/c it was probably pretty rusted.
Thanks .

Wow...that's a great VSS rebuild writeup. Thanks to gprtech for it.
Archaeology student should definitely attempt the rebuild, but just note that on 1/31/2013 gprtech posted an update that he's looking into putting in a ball bearing instead of the nylon washer to make it a permanent fix. He might want to check with gprtech on that modification.

I phoned the local Dealer and was quoted $230 for the VSS... OUCH!
I will be attempting the rebuild, and also thought it would not hurt to have a spare. I came across this on eBay AIRTEX 5S4822. It might not hurt to have a spare just in case
Thoughts?
