Default just got a 1998 Disco 1 but whats wrong with it?

Hello,
I just got a 1998 disco 1 about a month ago and I’m hooked I love it. It has 98000 miles on it no rust super clean from the inside out, but there is something wrong with her and I’m not sure what it is?
It makes this whooping sound from the back end it starts at about 20-35 mph and gets faster as I go faster and stops when I stop moving. I’m going to be working on her Wednesday, I want to know where to start looking, I’m planning on changing all my fluids you know T-case, Difs and Trans also changing the rear rotors and pads wheel bearing. So far I have grist all the drive line points. O and I can’t get it to go in to 4lo. Please let me know what info is out there
Thanks

Sounds like you are looking at most of the right things. Don't forget to check the tires.

Will the transfer case go into neutral? If so, try getting to to go into lo by rolling slowly. If not, you might have a bad solenoid or maybe seized up linkage.

While working on diffs and transfer case, try to open fill plug first.

There is a handy pump you can get at autoparts store that will screw into a jug of lube.

Many members run the 85-140 stuff for those areas.

Pix shows the vent bolt for the axles, they get plugged up with gunk, and then diff oil is forced out thru seals into brake pad areas. They are attached to breathing tubes that go elsewhere, blow those out as well.

Pix of radiator is the $2 1/2" NPT plug you need to replace that plastic POS that came with the radiator.

Check your fan clutch, Discos are not tolerant of oveheating. Very intolerant. Eat your wallet type.

Temp guage should not get above 50% on the scale (9:00 position). It is not like Detroit iron, you can't run at three-quarters, etc.

A very good oil is Shell 15W40 Rotella, has a lot of engine cleaning chemicals it it for the big diesel trucks. Change oil early and often, 5000 miles - not the 7500 or once year that factory suggested.

Download the free RAVE tech manual set - covers electrical, shop, body, owners, etc. Check the technical part of the Disco 1 area - lots of things to do to new2me trucks.

Feedback is one of the best things a member can provide to the forum, it lets everyone know what worked and what didn't; it helps those who read but never venture a comment; and it helps the bloviating bib overall badbreath rednecks like me to know if we wuz even close.

Changed all the fluids T-case and Difs did not get to the Trans today but checked the stick looked good the noise is still there. I was going to change the rotors and pads today as my parts came in as I went to do them I notice they gave me the wrong rotors so I now have to wait two more days for the right ones to come in. the old rotors are pretty bad.

Search our forum for "Death Wobble" - a condition where things like wheel bearings, warped rotors, etc. - can combine to cause a surprise "oscillation" that is borderline "crash & smash"....

When I first got my 98 D1 I had a noise like this when I hit 25 30 and it got louder as I got faster. It sounded like the rear end was worn out but it checked out so I moved to the wheel bearings. That was not it either. Finally I figured it out. The luggage rack makes a terrible wooshing sound if the bar is placed right above the elevated part of the roof. I moved the rack bar forward and no more noise

I like the thinking out side of the box with the rack noise, sadly that was not it. I removed the crossbars and the noise was still there. I read on a post to go at a slow speed and pull the E brake and see if the noise stops, and it did. I went about 15 mph and slowly pulled the E brake it stop while I had the brake up. And started back up again when I put it down. What does this mean?
