Just now bought a 96 disco!
just download it (and the electrical manual, owners manual, etc) from the google drive link in my signature. Print out what you need when you need it.
Even after changing bearings, lifters, camshaft and such, my 96 ticked for a couple minutes cold, then stopped while it heated up, then ticked again at temp. Drove great, sounded like a diesel engine at times, long term fuel trim was over 11%. So, while checking for vacuum leaks, I spotted some weeping where the lower plenum joins the intake manifold. I got busy and resealed the plenum to manifold. To my great surprise, the ticking stopped. LT Fuel trim went nearly 0%. Now it drives even better, and all my worries about worn piston slap were a waste of time and mental energy.
By the way, if you don't know what a valve hydraulic lifter is (16 cylindrical pieces per Rover V8), maybe this isn't the rig you need. I'm sure this forum could help if you ever decide to put it up for adoption
. RPI Engineering has lots of info and experience with these engines regarding the weakest links and write ups for common parts to replace. You could spend a ton of money just on the motor if you decide to. Or just keep up with oil and filter changes and drive on.
Happy trails and best of luck anyway. No need to panic...
