Default Leaky oil-cooler line.

The upper oil-cooler line (from behind the filter to the rad) is leaking pretty badly on my D1. It's coming from the rubber portion of the line, not an o-ring or fitting.

I took the entire line to Napa as they make hydraulic lines and such there. They came up with a way to crimp on a couple new pieces although we would have to take one of the small bends out of the steel portion of the hose to make it work. Anyway, those fittings were $20 apiece, then another $8 for the hose.

I decided to try cutting off the failed hose at the crimp(s) and using new rated hose and dual hose clamps on each end. Has anyone else done this and if so, what were your results? If it leaks I will pop for the crimped ends I guess...alreadt have the hose at least. Can't find the OEM LR hose for less than $70.

Oh, also found all the o-rings to replace thoughout the system at local hardware. $0.31 apiece.

Here's another option:

Lucky8 Llc. - Take the road less traveled...

Obviously it's expensive, but I'm sure you could piece together the same setup for less.

OK, did the ghetto-repair on the oil cooler line and guess what...it works! Cost was $10.56 (I splurged and bought new hose-clamps @ $2.99).

You won't believe this though...now the other one is leaking.

I think this one actually may have been the culprit to begin with. Oh well, at least I know what to do now.

Here are some photos of my handi-work:

You're welcome ESPN. I used a cut-off wheel on an air-grinder but certainly a hacksaw would work. I was also careful to de-burr the ends and shot some carb cleaner in there to clean out any metal shavings, etc that might of been left behind.

The only downside I can see is I won't have my on-board rust-proofing device any longer... ;-)

I always thought it was to make the trails a little harder for the Jeeps behind us....

I did read one thread on here about taking the old oil when you do an oil change, put it in a spray bottle and use it for the same purpose, just spray the entire underneath as rustproofing treatment.

That would explain why my disco had nearly no rust, it had a nice pre-rebuild engine multiple-leak continuous oil shower.

Wonder who started that one... **me** I did that last week and went to school the next day (cold oil tends to not drip as much) well when the Rover warmed up and I pulled into the parking lot my Disco was dripping so much that the principal called my name over the intercom so I would go to the office... I am a good kid and was shocked that I was called to the office... When I went in there, he said "uhh you better go check your car oil, I believe its leaked out... I laughed and said well you know why the British don't build tvs? They can't figure a way to make them leak oil" He was speechless..... I politely said thank you and returned to class.
