People have and do convert, but my dear god that's a crap load of work for the best case scenario of everything being not quite right. Other countries obviously have left hand drive TDI versions, your best bet would be to buy the engine and all the ancillaries from a rusty donor over seas and have all the bits shipped over. Then "maybe" it will all go together properly and retain some value for its rarity here.

I go with the 4.6 crank and rods in a rebuilt motor.

Engine swap gas to diesel is a losing proposition....if you want diesel that bad look for one to import from South America. Also readily available CHEAP in South Africa but will be RHD. Been exploring options to import Defenders from these spots and it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than people think. Why on Earth people are spending $20k+ on 25 yr old 110s is beyond me.

Could you not just buy an old diesel disco 1 from here and do the swap? There’s one for sale a few hours north of me with the 300 tdi in it. I know they were sold in Canada, so I assume they were in the states too. Perhaps there not as good as the td5 but they would be easier to work on

As others said...

Waste of time and money unless you have a cherry 99 (IMO white base model with perfect interior, drive train)

Just import a RHD tdi for cheap, or LHD for more. 91 and 92 MY are now legal for import

Either do that or swap a new motor in
