It is a ball that the panavise mount tightens on to hold your phone. Well, actually it is to hold the handset for your phone. I had one way back in the day and my d2 still has the ball just like that one.
+1 on the d1 and gems. I'm down on my d2 and bosch for like the last six months. I just had to have the longer back end... Sigh.
