I thought of another diagnosis that i have left out that I had eliminated but maybe not. Headlights flash brighter and dimmer about 120 beats per minute. Sorta like those motorcycle attention getters. I thought maybe voltage was affecting computer management. Voltmeter reads 15 but no fluctuation. I thought it was a little high so i took the Alternator off and had it tested. Also ran the unit with just the battery voltage no alternator with no change.

Sounds like regulator about to go, or ground strap from battery to frame and engine to frame may be loose, corroded, or off. Can test for that by attaching 1 battery jumper cable from (-) battery to engine metal.

Thanks Savannah, I tried all that. If i can get the engine straightened out then it'll probably get a GM one wire like I have on the 240z, Spitfire, Dynahoe, Dakota, 50 ford pickup and everything else that failed at charging 12volts

OK information is developed but nothing definitive. My ole Grandpappy said there comes a time when you need to wipe off all the tools and put em away and start all over.
1998 Discovery, 4.0 140k miles. Running rich, black smoke from exhaust, plugs black soot fouled, engine starts and runs smooth, rough over 3k rpm.
What's the logic tree and what have we all missed?

Bad injector pouring fuel into the engine, maybe. But, it's not confined to a single cylinder, or I misunderstood the info you previously provided.

IIRC you mentioned one bank is rich and one is lean, correct? I recall reading something to that effect in the RAVE, perhaps the ECU can't read the O'2 on that side at all and dumps fuel so it knows it's got enough? I'm too tired to read right now, maybe someone who can think straight will chime in.

Look in at reluctor tabs? Bent ones could impact timimg. You still have the 10 inch vacuum at idle?

I read the very same description in the RAVE and mentioned it already, I just cannot remember what item causes that.

Time to read some more I guess.

That occurs when the R/L O2 sensors are switched.

Savannah, couldn't find 'reluctor' in the Rave manual. Still 10inches of wacuum. Rave shows Idle air controller. Also mentions a vacuum line to the cruise control diaphram thatis not on mine. The port is there on the diaphram but no line. I don't see how the O2 sensors could be switched but anyhow they have been removed as the exhaust pipes are off. All cylinders are firing according to pulling the plug wire when running.

see Allbrit MG ROVER & Land Rover Katalog for how it links together. If can't see through slot, remove starter or Crank Position Sensor and all spark plugs, rotate engine and inspect with mirror and light. Or oil pan.

Cruise control gets its vacuum from a small electric pump behind front driver side head light. It does not use engine vac, and should not be cross connected to any engine vac.
