This is my first post. Please forgive my ignorance about technical issues. I didn't see any threads when I searched the forum that contained my specific issue (or at least one that had a conclusion).

I have a 1995 Discovery with 170k miles.

Recently when I went to start the motor, it ran for about 5-10 seconds and died. My friend and I looked at the engine bay and noticed the MAF appeared to be visibly damaged on the plastic outside. I unhooked the MAF and started motor. It runs without dying but is a little rough.

I picked up a cheap, used MAF on ebay to replace the broken one. When I installed that one, same thing happens. Motor runs for about 5-10 seconds and dies. Once again, it runs without the MAF plugged in.

So I decide to buy a new MAF. When I install it this morning, same thing happens. Motor runs for about 5-10 seconds and dies.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Yep. It runs a little rough, but it will run and drive ok.

If is runs with the MAF unplugged then why are you hear? Just drive the damn thing.


Is the MAF installed in the right direction?
Did you do any work to it before this happened?
Is there a vacuum leak in the air intake tubing? If a clamp is not tight or the tubing is cracked then extra air getting in that the MAF is not reading can throw things out of whack.

 

You might also entertain the possibility that the wiring is damaged.
