I just noticed that my 98 Disco is missing its front cross member. I've seen plenty of threads about removing it for the D2, but almost no information on the D1. I've got a replacement coming on Monday, but wanted to know what sort of risks / damage I should expect from having it missing for some time.
It's unclear how long it has been off the truck, though my guess is that it was the previous owner who removed it and he owned the vehicle for about a year or so. I've never wheeled the vehicle hard and I don't believe the previous owner did either...
Both my trucks have that. It stiffens up the chassis. Suspect it comes into play during more extreme torqueing/ jacking, only two or three wheels on the ground, for example. Might play a role in crash test ratings too?
I stopped by IE Rovers today to pick up a custom-made crossmember for my Rover. Just as strong (thicker DOM tubing), but smaller diameter for better clearance.
Ed @ IE Rovers is going to begin selling these soon so if anybody else is missing theirs, they're available.
