which motor?

I own a discovery 1 from around 1991. The engien is supposed to be a 3.9 ltr. But I dont think the engien is the originale. The serial number is 22D05596D. According to the lists of serials online, it is a 3.5 ltr either produced after 1986 or in 1990. But can I some how know the exact year of production? And what does the D at the end signify?
