My '97 D1 SE7, which I purchased new, has been parked for a while because it has become unreliable. I have spent some money tracking down this issue which I now believe is the fuel pump - not sure though. Other projects have been piling up a bit as well including poor brake performance, 02 sensors, a suddenly weak starter, and a worsening death wobble. There are a few other small things, e.g. fluid leaks, a little rust, etc., but otherwise its a nice looking and solid vehicle. There has been a debate with my wife about whether repairing it would be throwing good money after bad.

Then a few weeks ago a neighbor's oak tree dropped a sizable limb on the roof. It shattered the sunroof, crushed the left roof rack, and dented the roof pretty good in 2 spots. The insurance company declares it a total loss and is offering $3850.00 or $3550.00 and I keep the Rover. Title becomes salvage regardless, according to them.

So tell me, does the headliner come out to replace the sunroof and roof rack? The headliner is a couple of years old, really well done at a reasonable price by a local shop. I don't have the time to do serious work on my vehicles any more, but trying to sort out my options a bit. I'm not inclined to turn the truck over to the insurance company for $300.00, but I don't have the time or space to part it out myself. Any opinions on my situation are welcome.

 

Where are you located.....? (I hope close to me!). You don't want it, you don't want it, you don't want it........ It all depends on the Rover market in your area, you have a running vehicle with a few honestly small issues. Take the insurance pay off, keep the truck and sell it locally then take the wife out for a nice dinner. Rest up before hand cuz you might get mauled afterwards.

 

Are you someone that works on your own vehicles? If so I would keep it, fix it and probly come out ahead $ wise

As far as salvage title if you keep it, I have never had that happen and totaled my share of cars , I would check into that

I'd take that check and fix it too. Most stock trucks don't sell for that much...maybe I should go saw have way through some limbs...

 

I'd take the money and keep the truck. I'd buy another better used D1. Steal parts from the wrecked one. Scrap the catalytic converters and the rest of the truck when you're done.

I don't do any heavy lifting on my own vehicles any longer. Just the simple stuff. I considered replacing the fuel pump myself, but just don't have the time or work space.

So in order to replace the sunroof glass, does the headliner have to come out? Same for the roof rack runners?

 

To do just the sunroof glass no, the headliner can stay in but the sunroof must be able to tilt to access the glass fasteners. The roof rails unfortunately require the headliner to be removed.

 

Ditch the roof and make a canvas top.
