My Tire Size Blog
Well I finally got my tires. 255/85 I was very split between the two and honestly couldn't decide for months. Then two points made my choice.
- I wanted a SLIGHTLY wider contact patch to help me on the sand I often traverse.
- I wanted that HUGE look.
While I haven't owned 235/85 [doesn't mean I wont next time] I have seen enough pictures to know what they require. Heres the differences.
235/70 Stock Tire Size 2.5" OME HD LIFT

235/85 requires 2" lift heres a picture of them on OME HD

255/85 2.5 if you merely want to fit them. If you want to wheel them add 2 more inches.
Heres my truck with the OME HD, sorry wheels look goofy, they still have the tire goo on them and simply are TOO big for 2.5" of lift.

Here is a picture of 255/85 with OME HD and 2" Body Lift

Needless to say Im ordering my Body Lift Tomorrow.
As far as driveability.. with 255 your increasing diameter by 17.5% Your gauge is now 5mph fast at 60mph instead of 5mph slow. Thats a 10MPH difference. Dont forget to multiply your gas mileage by 17.5%
Haven't filled up yet but Im sure itll drop a bit especially in the city.
Oh and at this point Im really wanting my sway bars up. I didn't feel I needed them with my 2.5" lift.. well now Im sitting 2.5" highER and you can feel it.. When I add 2" body lift.... WELL OMG..
I may or may not regear. I may or may not keep these tires.
FINAL REVIEW:
Go with 235/85 if you want a good driving VERY capable and reliable vehicle..
If you just HAVE to have that BIG look, you will have to take the negatives. I would say 235/85 would have to be the perfect size for this vehicle height wise, I just had to go big. If you want something wider go wider but stay at 32" or less.

tell me bout it!! I was thinking about putting off the Body lift for a week or two. But then boss told me were working 24hrs the next two days a 45$ an hour!! ORDERING TOMORROW.
If you do decide to regear go with a 4.10 or 4.11 itll put you real close to factory gearing and speedo with that size tire. Yeah you definately need some kind of lift before you head off roading with them under it.
i agree with brian on regearing. im running 265/75 and my truck is slow as **** off the start and getting up hills. i can see (thanks 2 the scanguage) the engine load is pushed a lot further than it was when i was running stock tires.
I am getting used to the gearing. It's really not bad and my truck doesn't downshift when crossing out interstate overpasses so it has the power.
I decided this is what I am going to do.
I called to order my bodylift yesterday. Rovertym said 3 weeks before it ships. I said hell no. I looked around but couldn't find what I wanted. Then it hit me a body lift is a body lift. And most of the parts aren't even nessisary. I'll do a little write up when my parts come in. Total it's going to cost me 60$ shipped. Still haven't figured out what to do with the body tie rods but I found a way around everything else. Anyways here's what I'm doing.
I'm going to lift it 2" and see how I like it. If it still doesn't tickle my fancy I'm going to cut the blocks 1" and get 235/85.
I wanted a wider tire but can't seem to find anything in the 240-255mm wide but only 32" tall ball park.

Any plans on how to relocate the bumpers?
I know I had to regear mine when I put 33"s on it would downshift on level ground. If I remeber rite the speedo showed 55 and the gps showed 68.

Speedo should read 55 while gps reads 59-1/2 - 60mph
I probably won't bother with bumper brackets though they are super simple. I'm going to build some sill sliders next weekend and hopefully the following weekend start on a new front bumper. Or get an arb. I can make a tube bumper easily I have the materials and know how to bend but I like the arb style

I guess when actually measured my tires they were 34 1/4" (why couldnt they label them 34" on the side wall) so that mite be why the speedo showed that much difference??? Im sure with a 2" body lift the factory bumpers wont look to bad, but if your going with aftermarket or home made bumper that should cover everything in the front.
